In Encinitas, a joint effort between the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, San Diego County District Attorney's Office, and the Carlsbad Police Department led to the Gun Safety Event yesterday. This event facilitated the removal of unwanted firearms from the community, allowing residents to exchange firearms for gift cards.
As per a Hoodline report, participants received $100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons and "ghost" guns. The event also assured participant anonymity and all guns collected would be destroyed.
During the collection event, 105 firearms were surrendered, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. This included handguns, rifles, shotguns, assault weapons, and "ghost" guns. On top of this, 20 cable locks and 35 gun safety lockboxes were distributed.

The success of the event is credited to the cooperative effort of various organizations like the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, the Carlsbad Police Department, and the City of Encinitas. Furthermore, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department thanked San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention for their support. Their purpose is not only to reduce the number firearms in circulation but also to address the societal impact of such violence.
