A night of terror struck Chicago as armed robbers opened fire in separate incidents, injuring two men on the city's West and Northwest sides. The violent encounters unfolded on a fear-filled Friday evening.
The first gunshot victim, a 33-year-old man, fell prey to an attempted armed robbery that took place shortly after 8:15 p.m. in the Homan Square neighborhood's 3700 block of West Polk Street, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. The man was reportedly ambushed while taking out the trash, facing a gun and a demand for his possessions. In a cruel twist of fate, a bullet tore into his lower back, leaving him critically wounded. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Later in the evening, the specter of gunfire haunted Chicago again. At approximately 10:30 p.m., a 46-year-old man encountered his own slice of the night's brutality. While in the 4400 block of West Belmont Avenue, two masked marauders plunged a neighborhood into fear, this time targeting a liquor store, as reported by The Chicago Tribune. The assailants, brandishing their anonymity as much as their weapons, shot the man in the shoulder when they realized he was inside.
The second victim was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his wounds were treated, and his condition stabilized to fair. As of yet, the Chicago Police Department's diligent search for the perpetrators continues, with no suspects in custody.
