A 28-year-old man was shot and killed late Friday night on Chicago's Southwest Side after an argument turned violent in the 7300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, and rather than wait for help, he got behind the wheel and drove himself to the hospital before he died.
Argument Ends in Gunfire on Kedzie Avenue
The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Friday following a verbal dispute, according to CBS News. The wounded man drove himself to Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, where he was later pronounced dead, the station reported.
The block sits within Chicago's Chicago Lawn community area near Marquette Park, an area patrolled by the Chicago Police Department's 8th District, according to property records reviewed by LoopNet. Holy Cross Hospital, the 160-bed acute care facility at 2701 W. 68th Street where the victim sought treatment, operates within the Sinai Chicago health system and handles among the highest annual ambulance run volumes in the state, per background compiled on Wikipedia.
Area One Detectives Take Over, No Suspect Identified
Chicago Police Department Area One detectives were assigned to lead the homicide investigation, and as of Saturday no suspects were in custody, per the same CBS News account. That unit operates out of a South Side headquarters and covers major violent crime and felony cases across multiple South and Southwest Side police districts, including the 8th District, according to the Chicago Police Department.
What sparked the argument that led to the shooting has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether surveillance cameras along the Kedzie corridor captured the confrontation or the gunman's escape. The victim's identity had not been released as of Saturday.
Part of a Pattern Along the Kedzie Corridor
Friday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents along South Kedzie Avenue this year. Hoodline previously reported on a fatal drive-by in the 2800 block in August that killed a 29-year-old man, following an earlier drive-by shooting in the 2300 block in March. The corridor has also seen a critical shooting on West 63rd Street in Chicago Lawn in late August and a fatal ambush shooting on the Southwest Side in mid-August, both of which were also assigned to Area One detectives.

The killing comes as citywide homicides reached 289 through August 2026, keeping violent crime largely on pace with 2025's historic 60-year low, according to figures reported by WTTW News. Still, Cook County Medical Examiner data showed 219 homicides in the first six months of 2026, a 5% increase over the 208 recorded during the same period in 2025, according to a report covered by WBEZ.
