A 29-year-old man was shot in the head and killed while standing outside on the 2800 block of South Kedzie Avenue in Little Village, Chicago police say. Someone drove by and opened fire on him during the attack, and he died at the scene. No one is in custody in connection with the shooting.
The drive-by shooting was first reported by ABC7 Chicago, which said Chicago Police Department Area Four detectives are investigating. The 2800 block of South Kedzie Avenue sits within CPD's 10th District, known as Ogden, and falls under the Area Four Detective Division, a unit the city restored in 2020 specifically to cover West Side districts and speed up violent crime investigations, according to the City of Chicago. No vehicle or suspect description had been released as of the latest reporting.
A Block With a Violent Recent History
This is not the first deadly shooting on this exact stretch of Kedzie Avenue. In June 2024, a 19-year-old man was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting on the same 2800 block after police responded to a gunshot detection system alert, per CBS News. Less than a year later, in May 2025, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder following a gang-motivated beating and stabbing on that same block, the station also reported.
Under Illinois law, intentionally firing a gun toward a person or from inside a moving vehicle is charged as Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 1 felony carrying four to 15 years in prison, according to the Illinois General Assembly. Prosecutors frequently pursue that charge alongside first-degree murder when a shooting proves fatal, though no charges have been filed in this case.
Part of a Pattern Along the Kedzie Corridor
Thursday's homicide follows a string of drive-by attacks in Little Village this year. In March, a 42-year-old driver was critically wounded when occupants of a passing gray sedan opened fire on his car in the 2300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, Hoodline previously reported. In June, a 33-year-old man was found shot to death near South Hamlin Avenue and West 30th Street, also investigated by Area Four detectives. Then, on July 29, a drive-by shooting wounded three men, including two with head injuries, as part of an overnight surge in violence across Chicago's South and Southwest sides.
Citywide Numbers Show a Mixed Picture
Little Village has also seen genuine gains against gun violence over the past year. Enlace Chicago, the neighborhood's primary community violence intervention organization, expanded street outreach and victim advocacy programs that contributed to a 40% reduction in violent crime in Little Village in 2025, according to the UChicago Crime Lab. Citywide, Chicago closed 2025 with 416 homicides, a nearly 30% drop from the 587 recorded in 2024 and the lowest annual total since 1965, per Metropolitan Peace Initiatives.
That progress has slowed in 2026. A mid-year report from the Council on Criminal Justice found that recorded homicides in Chicago rose 3% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year, even as overall violent crime victimizations continued to decline. It remains unclear whether Area Four detectives have identified a vehicle or suspect in Thursday's killing, or whether local outreach workers will be deployed along the Kedzie corridor to head off retaliatory violence.
