The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) disclosed receiving a $4.5 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration. This fund is engineered towards creating a digital platform to bolster the management of future construction initiatives and enhance project implementation.
This grant, among 10 awarded to 35 states that applied, contributes to Gov. J.B. Pritzker's agenda to revamp and modernize IDOT. "Under the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, our goal at IDOT is to becoming the country's most innovative department of transportation," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman as per Illinois.gov.
The digital system formed by this funding would empower IDOT to cut down paper usage by sharing information about upcoming projects electronically. It's expected to foster 3D modeling and aerial surveying, thereby improving precision and boosting efficiency of data collection for other state and local agencies to use. Notably, it's anticipated to reduce worker exposure in work zones and environmentally sensitive areas due to reduced surveying activity.
This grant reinforces IDOT's efforts as part of Gov. Pritzker's bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan. The plan, enacted in 2019, is designed to infuse $33.2 billion over six years into the state's aging transportation infrastructure. This is intended to generate jobs and stimulate economic growth. It encapsulates all modes of transportation—roads, bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
Under the Rebuild Illinois plan, the state's transportation framework is set to experience extensive improvements, including renovations of over 3,000 miles of highway and nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck within six years. All these advancements will be augmented by the digital enhancements facilitated by this $4.5 million grant.
