Democratic State Representative Matt Hanson of Aurora, Illinois, stands accused of driving under the influence, resulting in two DUI charges. Hanson's personal failings have drawn immediate scrutiny, demonstrating the expectations placed on public servants.
Montgomery Police discovered Hanson asleep in his vehicle on October 27th. Exhibiting signs of inebriation, such as slurred speech, glassy eyes, and the smell of alcohol, Hanson was tested and found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.186%—more than double the legal limit— the Daily Herald has reported.
In the aftermath of his arrest, Hanson exhibited remorse, accepting full accountability for his misstep. He shared his intent via email to undergo an alcohol evaluation and adhere to any court-proposed conditions with both the Chicago Tribune and Daily Herald.
The public trust once bestowed upon Hanson now seems to falter. Given his current predicament, his capacity to effectively represent District 83 comes under close scrutiny.
Hanson awaits his court appearance on the 22nd.
