In the village of Johnsburg, Illinois, a standoff led local authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order today, November 15. As reported by NBC Chicago, a man dealing with a mental health crisis barricaded himself and his spouse in their home late Tuesday evening, spurring tension in the local community.
As the crisis continued into the early morning hours today, School District 12 closed all of its schools for the day. A Chicago Sun-Times article mentioned that the closure announcement was made around 6:45 a.m. A neighborhood daycare center also remained closed while the order was in effect.
Johnsburg Police Chief Jason Greenwald updated the public via a press conference. After setting up a perimeter and negotiating with the subject, the man was safely apprehended and is currently under medical care, as per Greenwald. Charges are currently pending against him. The order was lifted around 9 a.m., with the residents reassured of their safety by Greenwald.
Greenwald also pointed to the ongoing police presence in the area, implying that the investigation is still underway. Claremont Hills, the area impacted, is near Hamlin Drive and Fillmore Road, as covered by The Chicago Sun-Times.
