Two Lawrence men, Deiby Bladimil Casado Ruiz, 30, and Pedro Antonio Sanchez Bernabel, 31 have received sentencing in connection with distributing fentanyl at the Bedford Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Casado Ruiz received a 24-month prison sentence along with three years of supervised release on November 1. Bernabel was sentenced yesterday to 14 months in prison and three years of supervised release, according to the Department of Justice.
Pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and one count of distribution of fentanyl on July 21, their criminal activities spanned from July 27, 2022 to November 2022. During this period, they conspired to sell over 40 grams of fentanyl at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford, including to a veteran seeking treatment for a substance use disorder.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, nearly 50,000 recorded overdose deaths were reported in 2020 alone due to opioids in the U.S. This menacing reality is exemplified by the Bedford case, proving even those committed to recovery from substance abuse disorders are not immune to the grip of addiction.
As given by the Department of Justice, the cooperation of the Bedford VA Medical Center Police Service and the Lawrence Police Department illustrates a combined effort to tackle this problem, as stated by the Department of Justice.
Furthermore, the sentencing of Casado Ruiz and Bernabel contributes to the increasing tally of prosecutions and convictions connected to opioid distribution. In an attempt to curb the epidemic, authorities are implementing stricter penalties for those engaged in illicit drug trafficking. This marks a shift in approach to drug addiction, focusing on prevention, treatment, and law enforcement measures alike.
