King and Queen Cantina, a beloved San Diego haunt, has had its liquor license temporarily suspended by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). CBS 8 reports that this popular Little Italy eatery will be shut down for 25 days due to repeated infractions linked to excessive sound levels.
The ABC made clear in their statement that businesses applying for a liquor license must comply with specific regulations, including those concerning late-night noise. Local government and law enforcement collaborate with ABC to assess an establishment's impact on its community before rendering license approval. It is still unclear where the noise complaints lodged against King and Queen Cantina, positioned near several bars and restaurants within a residential zone, originated from.
King and Queen Cantina, renowned for Mexican cuisine, live entertainment, and dynamic atmosphere is integral to San Diego’s nightlife culture. The restaurant indicated on Instagram that 'remodeling' was to blame for the sudden shutdown.
The owner, Jorge Cueva "Mr. Tempo" Estrella, is a well-known figure in the restaurant industry, with over 100 restaurant openings credited to him. Opening its doors in 2017, King and Queen Cantina, which Sandiego Ville features, was even once hailed by Forbes as being akin to the 'Michael Jordan of restaurants.' The bi-level establishment spread across 4,800 square feet, is nestled in the community-centric neighborhood of Little Italy.
The restaurant’s Instagram update hints at its associate location, Mr. Tempo in the Gaslamp district, as a potential hangout while the Cantina is closed.
