San Francisco Braces for APEC Conference Traffic DisruptionsSource: San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency

The city of San Francisco is set to host the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference from November 13 through 19. The event, anticipated to draw over 20,000 people, could lead to increased traffic, disrupted transit services, and limited pedestrian and cyclist access. Residents and travelers are advised to avoid travel if possible and to monitor travel updates on platforms like 511.org.

The scale of the event will undoubtedly trigger disruptions to public transportation. From November 13 to 19, Muni will reroute several lines and suspend Muni Metro T-Third service entirely, the SFMTA has reported. Yet, it is worthwhile to mention that no significant impacts related to APEC are anticipated for BART, Caltrain, and the San Francisco Bay Ferry.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, a major transportation artery, will be restricted during the APEC conference. The two bridge lanes will close from Tuesday, November 14, through Friday, November 17. The California Highway Patrol will also shut down off-ramps from Interstate 80 during this period while leaving the exits to Yerba Buena and Treasure islands open.

Golden Gate Bridge users should note select closures during the conference. The Dana Bowers Vista Point off-ramp from northbound U.S. 101 will be closed from November 14th to 18th, blocking access to the Vista Point and Golden Gate Bridge Pedestrian Path. This will impact pedestrians crossing from Marin County.

While the South of Market and Nob Hill neighborhoods are due to host most APEC activities, overflow may impact other areas. It's important for travelers and residents to exercise caution when approaching the security zones established by the United States Secret Service—access will be denied to both pedestrians and bicycles.
