Affordable housing remains a critical development issue, as highlighted by the recent opening of Milejo Village in San Ysidro. This development offers not only affordable housing but also additional supportive services for seniors, families experiencing homelessness, and individuals with mental health challenges, as per a County News Center report, dated yesterday.
Milejo Village, in San Diego County, represents a collaboration involving the County of San Diego, the San Diego Housing Commission, and Jamboree Housing Corp. The County's investment of $6.7 million, via No Place Like Home Funding and the Innovative Housing Trust Fund, significantly contributed to the project's swift completion.
Milejo Village is comprised of 64 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes in order to accommodate families and individuals with incomes at or below 25% of the Area Median Income (AMI) or $34,450 annually for a four-member family. Amenities feature a community center and kitchen, computer lab, laundromat facilities, pet-washing room, outdoor dining courtyard, tot lot, and parking. Proximity to grocery stores, public transport, parks, health centers, and education resources enhances the convenience for residents.
Not only is Milejo Village designed to offer affordable housing, but it also empowers beyond living arrangements. Initiatives like on-site case management, counseling, ESL classes, life skills and job training, financial planning, after-school programs, healthcare accessibility, and resident goal planning aim to facilitate a sustainable future. The development is full, as a County News Center report confirms 100% occupancy.
In prioritizing affordable housing, San Diego County has marked Milejo Village's opening as its sixth in 2023. The County has further laid the groundwork for nine additional projects.
