Illegal firearms continue to plague many American cities, including Springfield, Massachusetts. Recently, the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) announced the seizure of their 300th illegal gun in 2023, demonstrating a persistent issue within the city Springfield Police Department.
This seizure occurred during a coordinated gun and drug investigation where officers were monitoring juvenile suspects believed to be selling marijuana while armed. This culminated in the arrest of three juveniles and 21-year-old Jorge Santiago, underscoring the issue of illegal firearms and the rising participation of youths in such crimes, according to Springfield Police Department.
The seized firearm was a high-capacity weapon loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition. It underscored the potential danger posed by illegal firearm trafficking and possession, according to the Springfield Police Department . A noteworthy fact is that one of the arrested juveniles was just 15 years old, highlighting the urgent need to address the issue of gun violence and youth crime.
As of today, the unit confiscated 128 illegal firearms, showcasing their unwavering commitment to public safety and gun violence prevention. In 2022, they seized a record 314 illegal firearms, and with more than a month to go in 2023, the 305 firearms seized so far provide a complex context in which to view their continued work.
