Chaos unfolded on a bustling Atlanta expressway earlier this week when a hazardous chemical spill demanded the closure of I-285 northbound, wreaking havoc for commuters and triggering a rapid response from emergency units. The spill, consisting of approximately 500 gallons of a concrete hardening agent laced with sulfuric acid, put lives at risk and saw two HERO Unit operators contaminated before the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department could intervene.
The chemical emergency began around 5 p.m. on December 7, igniting a race against time for the Atlanta Fire Rescue, which arrived posthaste to secure the scene, according to a report. The firefighters established a hot zone, denying entry near the spilling substances. The workers, unaware of the peril, found themselves in direct contact with the acidic agent, prompting a critical decontamination process.
These unit operators, one who had unknowingly traversed the contaminated ground and another who both smelled and touched the caustic liquid, were decontaminated and sent via Grady to a medical facility to ensure no lingering effects would claim their well-being.
