An act of political protest that escalated into a life-threatening situation left an Atlanta security guard severely burned after he tried to intervene. Michael Harris, a seasoned security professional with over 17 years of experience, sustained severe burns while attempting to prevent an individual from setting themselves on fire near the Israeli Consulate in Midtown Atlanta. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Harris's wife, Tangellia, has been a steadfast presence at his side since the December 1 incident and calls her husband a “hero.”

"I love my husband and I do consider him a hero; I just wish the outcome was different and that no one was harmed," Mrs. Harris expressed in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. The family has witnessed an outpouring of community support, with donations pouring in for Harris's recovery. His intervention came as the alleged protestor, reportedly in critical condition, was found with a Palestinian flag and gasoline used as an accelerant, according to Atlanta News First.

Harris, an Army veteran, was admitted to Grady Memorial Hospital with second- and third-degree burns. His medical team performed skin graft surgery, which has shown encouraging results. "It makes Michael feel good that people know and that he's not going unnoticed," said Tangellia Harris in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, highlighting the importance of community support in her husband's healing process.

Despite the trauma, Tangellia shared in an interview with Atlanta News First, "He's mentally struggling, physically he's damaged, he's coping well, his spirits are high." The family has started a GoFundMe to help with mounting medical expenses and emphasized the need for continued prayers. Harris's heroism reflects a lifetime of service, with his family noting, "Service is instilled in his heart," Tangellia Harris told Atlanta News First. Mrs. Harris remains hopeful for her husband's recovery, grateful for well-wishers, and reflective on the sacrifice he made without hesitation.
