A devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 85 in South Carolina claimed the life of a Georgia woman, among two others, this past weekend. Sharae Deneen Green, a 45-year-old Atlanta resident and mother, was identified as one of the fatalities of the tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of December 10, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta.
Traveling with her family and two dogs, Green's vehicle was struck in the southbound lanes around 5:20 a.m., according to information from the Greenville County Coroner's Office. On their way home from picking up one of their daughters from college Sunday, a vehicle heading in the wrong direction collided with the Green's car, triggering a subsequent crash involving two other vehicles.
The collision also resulted in severe injuries for Sharae Green's husband, Donald Green, a respected North Atlanta High School geometry teacher. Donald is currently hospitalized and undergoing multiple surgeries for a fractured foot and broken pelvis, as per a The Atlanta Journal-Constitution interview with Sarah Burns, the Master Teacher Leader for the high school’s math department. The collision also hospitalized one of their daughters, who remains in medical care, while the other daughter has been released.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, amid the chaos of the crash, the family's two pit bulls escaped from the vehicle. Asta, one of the dogs, has been found, but Moon, who is microchipped, is still missing. "They're just really concerned about Moon," Ashley Raymond with Anakin’s Trails Animal Trapping told the AJC. As the Greens cope with the loss of Sharae, the search for Moon adds to the family's deep concerns.
Colleagues and students of Donald Green are rallying support to aid his recovery and the family's sudden financial burdens through a GoFundMe campaign. In a statement obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, North Atlanta High School Principal Curtis Douglass expressed the school's profound sorrow: "Mr. Green is a great educator who loves his students. Our community will continue to donate to his GoFundMe page and set up additional support for him and his family." By Wednesday morning, the online fundraiser had gathered over $13,000.
Sharae Green had devoted her work to the Multi-Agency Alliance for Children (MAAC), aiding foster children in Georgia. The other individuals who lost their lives in the collision were Storm Mikayla Shepard, 27, of South Carolina, and Jimmie McKenley Wallace, 69, of Alabama, with all victims in separate vehicles when the tragedy struck. The deadly crash remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the state highway patrol.
