Tragedy struck in Glenview as two brothers were fatally shot in an August attack which law enforcement say stemmed from a previous altercation. Jose Guzman-Esquivel, aged 16, and his older brother 19-year-old Carlos, both sustained fatal gunshot wounds during a shooting in the residential area of Michael Todd Terrace.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office reported a distressing call on the night of August 19, leading to the discovery of the two brothers. Jose was found deceased at the scene, while Carlos later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. A third teenage victim was lucky to only suffer a graze wound. In what appears to have been a carefully planned retaliation, surveillance footage, and cellphone records allowed detectives to quickly and assertively piece together the harrowing events of that night, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
As the investigation unfolded, law enforcement officials identified four suspects involved in the deadly incident. Carlos Miranda, 22, and a 15-year-old were the alleged gunmen in the shooting. The teen suspect was said to have gotten a photo of Jose Guzman-Esquivel as part of a revenge plot stemming from a confrontation he had with Miranda in July. Two other suspects, Griselda Martinez, 42, and Sergio Patino-Jaime, 19, were accused of having aided in the attack by acting as lookouts and facilitating the disposal of the vehicle used during the crime.
In a disheartening turn of events, all four individuals have been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, while Miranda and the juvenile also face one count of attempted first-degree murder. According to FOX32 Chicago, Miranda and the juvenile were ordered to remain in custody. Meanwhile, Martinez and Patino-Jaime have reportedly been placed on electronic monitoring following their release from custody.
The community remains shaken by the violent loss of the Guzman-Esquivel brothers and awaits the conclusion of this tragic case as the suspects undergo legal proceedings. The juvenile charged in connection to the murders was due to appear in juvenile court, with the potential of being tried as an adult still in question.
