Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley delivered a poignant Christmas message at the midnight Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Calling for unity and peace, the cardinal's homily struck a chord at a time when the world grapples with war, division, and widespread suffering. "Peace on earth seems to be a shattered dream in today's world with the terrible wars in Ukraine and the Holy Land, with the contentious political climate and even polarization in the Church," O'Malley said, according to an early transcript provided by the Boston Globe.
The cardinal's message wasn't confined to the lavish walls of a church; earlier, O'Malley devoted his Christmas Eve to acts of charity, reflecting the essence of his sermon. He was seen handing out gifts at St. Peter’s Teen Center in Dorchester, before breaking bread with the less fortunate at the Pine Street Inn shelter. As wars rage in Ukraine and Gaza, his call for a global embrace of peace mirrored the sentiments expressed by Pope Francis. O'Malley added, “In a world where there is still no room at the inn, we must commit ourselves to be compassionate in our response to the poor, the sick, the refugees, the prisoners, the stranger, the homeless, those who are of a different color, speak a different language, those who embrace another ideology.” as per WHDH reports.
“We celebrate Christmas when we make it a feast of love, of friendship, of reconciliation, and peace,” Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley stated in his homily.
O'Malley's call to action and his message will continue to resonate with Catholics throughout Christmas Day. The archdiocese scheduled a broadcast of a pre-taped Mass early in the morning, followed by an 11:30 a.m. Mass led by the cardinal himself—both of which were set to air on local television networks, providing a platform for his message to reach beyond the ornate confines of the church.
