A 31-year-old Chicago man is facing serious charges after police say he viciously attacked a 61-year-old man with an object during a robbery in the city's Brainerd neighborhood. Stephan Sanders, of the 11600 block of South Wallace Street, was slapped with multiple charges on Thursday. He has been accused of attempted murder, armed robbery, being an armed habitual criminal, possessing a stolen firearm, and two counts of unlawful possession of weapon by a felon, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Details indicate that on November 9th, a fierce altercation occurred on the 9400 block of South Sangamon Street where Sanders is alleged to have struck the victim multiple times in the head before robbing him of his property. The arrest came about on Wednesday as police, supported by the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Stevens at his residence. Two firearms were recovered during the bust, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
Police have stated that the connection between Stevens and a crime was solidified after an investigation led them to identify him as the suspect involved in the brutal assault and robbery of the older man last month. There has been no additional information released about the condition of the victim or the specifics of items stolen during the crime.
Following his capture, Stevens faces a stream of felony charges with the weight of the judicial system bearing down. With prior convictions on his record, these new charges exacerbate the gravity of his current legal predicament. This case remains a worrying reminder of the violent and random nature of urban crime, often leaving civilians in the wake of danger and uncertainty.
