The Chicago Police Department faced embarrassment over the weekend when they inadvertently handed out expired gift cards during a gun buyback event, an error that had the officials scrambling to issue apologies and organize an exchange for those affected. The buyback, designed as an incentive for citizens to surrender firearms, offered $100 Visa gift cards at Saint Sabina Church but failed to check the expiration date of the cards, which had lapsed on November 30, two days prior to the event.
"We sincerely apologize," a spokesperson said, acknowledging the blunder that threatened to undercut the program's goal to "strengthen safety in our homes and neighborhoods," as reported by NBC Chicago, the department quickly acted to rectify the situation by announcing designated spots where the expired gift cards could be exchanged for valid ones, namely, the Chicago police station at 7808 South Halsted and Saint Sabina Church itself; however, individuals are required to present the expired gift cards to facilitate the exchange.
Adding to the details, ABC 7 Chicago stated that the police have put in place new procedures to prevent such errors in the future. The exchange at the 6th District Police Station and the church will start on December 4 and run through December 12, operating between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the police station, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the church, respectively.
For residents unable to make the exchange during the provided time frame, the Office of Community Policing has made themselves available to assist via phone at 312-745-5900 during regular business hours. The department has not only pledged for betterment but has given assurance for convenience, with anticipation that this gesture will maintain the community's trust and participation in such initiatives that are intended to promote collective safety.
