A chaotic scene unfolded on Jimmy Durante Boulevard in Del Mar after a BMW flipped and slammed into a large rock and an SDG&E utility box late yesterday morning, officials said.
Details about what led to the single-car smashup in the 2100 block of a boulevard are scant, but the wild wreck has shut down all southbound lanes at David Way, snarling traffic and drawing emergency crews to the site. The driver, whose escape from the twisted metal with minor injuries seems nothing short of miraculous, was the sole occupant of the car.
Crews from SDG&E were quickly on the scene, hustling to mend the mangled box and restore order. In a Del Mar Sheriff's Department statement, southbound Jimmy Durante Boulevard is expected to stay closed through Wednesday afternoon as repairs are ongoing and investigators comb through the aftermath.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The Sheriff's Department has not released further details about the driver's condition nor the circumstances leading up to the accident. Del Mar residents can keep updated on the situation's progress by checking the City of Del Mar's official alerts page.
