A routine morning at a Costco gas station in Glenview, a Chicago suburb, turned alarming when a driver was violently carjacked, authorities detailed. The Glenview Police were summoned to the scene in the 2900 block of Patriot Boulevard shortly before noon after a man, dressed in black and donning a ski mask, hijacked a Mercedes sedan while the owner was fueling up, as reported by NBC Chicago. The owner sustained leg injuries during an attempt to reclaim the vehicle, which prompted a hospital visit to Glenbrook Hospital.
The stolen Mercedes was later discovered abandoned, with the engine still running, in an alley near Western Avenue and Irving Park Road in Chicago's North Center neighborhood, the discovery marked the tail end of events that had the local police department weaving in and out of leads since midday, CBS Chicago reported. The Gas station carjackings seem to be on the rise with Ald. Bennett Lawson cautioning residents of the local Costco on Clybourn Avenue about an unsettling spike in similar incidents, "Many instances of carjackings at this Costco location and other gas stations have taken place when keys have been left in the vehicle," as stated in his newsletter.
Niles police revealed that their jurisdiction has been marred by automotive thefts, with three cars stolen and two attempted thefts since July 29 at the Costco on Melvina Avenue, reported CBS Chicago. No reports of violence or threats have been associated with the string of thefts, with each incident involving cars left unattended with engines running. This pattern highlights a complacent moment that thieves are exploiting with unrelenting consistency.
Costco has remained tight-lipped declining to comment on increased security measures following the recent incidents, despite the visible presence of security guards and vehicles at the Clybourn Avenue station, the response appears a silent testament to a corporation grappling with the reality imperfectly poised against the nimble and the nefarious, yet the Glenview carjacking remains under active investigation and Glenview police encourage individuals with information to step forward and contact them at 847-901-6055.
