California-based veterinarian Dr. Kwane Stewart, who has made it his mission to care for the pets of the homeless, has been named the 2023 CNN Hero of the Year. Chosen by online voters from among the Top 10 CNN Heroes of the year, Stewart's nonprofit Project Street Vet has become a beacon of hope, offering free medical care to the pets of those living on the streets.
Stewart's journey began over a decade ago after encountering a homeless man’s dog outside a convenience store. The animal's skin condition was treated, and the man's heartfelt thanks, "Thank you for not ignoring me," sparked a commitment that would shape Stewart's future efforts. In recognition of his dedication, Stewart will receive a $100,000 prize and the title of Elevate Prize winner, which confers an additional $300,000 in unrestricted funding and support resources from The Elevate Prize Foundation, per CNN report.
This year’s Top 10 finalists each received $10,000, with their stories ranging from converting vehicles into wash stations for homeless veterans to distributing books to children at barbershops to movements dedicated to saving coral reefs. Stewart, who has been in the veterinary field for decades, expressed his passion and determination for his work. "I see a pet in need, and I see a person who cares for them dearly who just needs some help," Stewart told CNN.
