A high-speed police pursuit through the streets of Cobb County took a turn when a patrol car ended up perched atop a suspect's overturned Jeep in bustling Midtown Atlanta. As reported by FOX 5, the chase initiated by Cobb County officers began on Austell Road following the crash and rollover of the suspect's gray Jeep Gladiator onto its roof.
Attempting to apprehend the Jeep's driver, a Cobb County officer executed a PIT maneuver that went awry, resulting in the police vehicle landing on top of the overturned suspect's car, as stated by the Georgia State Patrol. The pursuit, igniting on Sandtown Road and Hollyridge Drive, zigzagged onto the I-75 and surged to Atlanta. He went and exited at 17th Street and Howell Mill Road, according to Atlanta News First. Before the incident concluded, the Jeep recklessly struck two vehicles on Northside Drive and a third on Howell Mill Road.
The aftermath left Howell Mill Road swamped for hours, with traffic barricaded as the authorities canvassed and cleared the wreckage. The unidentified driver of the Jeep, after being involved in what started as an 'aggravated assault on an officer' scenario, was arrested and later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to treat minor injuries.
The Atlanta Police Department and Georgia State Patrol investigated the accidents. The Cobb County MCS, a task force targeting narcotics and other organized crimes had an officer who made the tactical vehicle intervention. Officials have yet to disclose the circumstances that triggered the pursuit.
