Two women from Joliet found themselves in handcuffs after police responded quickly to a reported theft at a Naperville Dick’s Sporting Goods store. The Naperville police nabbed the suspects on December 18 following an alert from a store employee who spotted them allegedly secreting items away.
According to official reports, the alert came in around 8:50 p.m. An officer already on the scene for an unrelated matter didn't have to look far to apprehend the suspected shoplifters as they attempted to quickly exit the store, tripping the store’s security alarm in their haste.
The culprits, Kionni Simmons, 22, and Ada Jane Gregory, 25, allegedly participated in the retail theft at the sporting goods retailer situated in the 2700 block of W. 75th Street. Simmons is charged with the more serious counts, facing felony burglary and felony retail theft, while Gregory is facing a charge for misdemeanor retail theft.
Both Simmons and Gregory were granted pre-trail release shortly after their arrests. As per the police statement, a third person was caught up in the incident, but on an unrelated warrant. The Naperville Police took the incident as an opportunity to remind the public that charges are nothing more than accusations, and the defendants should not be prematurely judged as they both are presumed innocent until to be proven guilty.
