A United States Postal Service mail carrier was robbed in broad daylight by two men, leaving her with moderate injuries, including a chipped tooth and swollen face. The suspects, who made away with her postal keys and cell phone, are currently on the loose.

The theft occurred on Wednesday, December 6, at around 1:59 p.m. in the 3400 block of Alma Street in Palo Alto, just as the mail carrier, a woman in her fifties, was on her delivery route. Once the victim refused to hand over her postal keys, one assailant forcibly shoved her to the ground while his accomplice snatched the keys and phone. They fled on foot, leaving the victim injured on the pavement. According to a news release by the Palo Alto Police Department, officers who rushed to the scene after the incident could not find the culprits.

Paramedics from the Palo Alto Fire Department attended to the victim. The assailants were described as two Hispanic males in their thirties. One stood about 5 feet 8 inches tall, while his accomplice was shorter, at approximately 5 feet 3 inches. Both were dressed in black and wore face masks during the attack.

In collaboration with the United States Postal Inspection Service, detectives actively pursue leads in the case. The loss of postal keys is particularly troubling as it opens the floodgates to a slew of potential crimes such as mail theft and identity fraud, and possessing them unlawfully could lead to a decade behind bars. The Palo Alto incident marks the first recent case of such a nature, but the crime is not unheard of elsewhere.

The Postal Inspection Service is offering up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. They urge anyone with relevant knowledge to come forward and contact their 24-hour hotline at (877) 876-2455. The Palo Alto Police also welcomes tips, which can be made anonymously through multiple channels, including a 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413, via email at [email protected], or through text messages or voice mail to (650) 383-8984.
