A manhunt is underway in suburban Schaumburg, Illinois, for a suspect in an attempted murder case who slipped police custody during a hospital stay. Dion T. Rodgers, a 23-year-old man linked to a shooting earlier this month, was last seen fleeing a medical facility where he was receiving treatment while under police watch.
According to Schaumburg police, Rodgers was arrested following the incident which occurred in the 1200 block of East Higgins Road around 2:45 a.m. on December 13. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that no one was injured in the shooting, but Rodgers now faces one charge of attempted first-degree murder. It was supposed quickly to notify the officers when Rodgers was due for release from the hospital, but the plan evidently failed.
Additional reporting from WLS details that Rodgers was seeking medical attention for issues unrelated to the shooting incident. Schaumburg police explained that necessary paperwork had been filed to alert the authorities ahead of his release. To their surprise, detectives were informed by the medical facility that Rodgers was already gone when they arrived to retrieve him.
The search for Rodgers is still active, with police cautioning the public against approaching him and advising them to call 911 if he is spotted. The suspect, described as 5'11" and weighing 173 pounds, was last believed to be in the area of the 2000 block of West Division Street in Chicago. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Schaumburg Police Department has enlisted the public's help in their search efforts.
