On January 1, 2024, the state will host free guided hikes in various parks, such as the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the expansive Mount Greylock State Reservation. According to a release on Mass.gov, the tradition began back in 1992 and has since seen hundreds of participants. Started with a gathering of 400 hikers and has burgeoned into a nationwide event after receiving the endorsement of America's State Parks in 2012.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey attesting to its capacity to bond people from "all ages, backgrounds, and demographics" with a shared mission of embracing the outdoors. “We are proud to continue this cherished tradition that encourages communities to come together, take in fresh air, and experience the beauty of our state,” said Governor Healey, as mentioned in the Mass.gov release. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll also emphasized the initiative's dual benefits to health and the economy, calling it a unique way of wishing Massachusetts residents health and happiness this New Year.
The hikes are also positioned as a drive to encourage more people to engage with the state's natural resources. Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper and DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo highlighted the efforts to connect residents to the state parks and cultivate a future generation of stewards for Massachusetts' natural spaces. "One of our goals at DCR is to inspire the next generation of stewards of our natural resources, and programs like First Day Hikes help us in that effort,” Arrigo said, as outlined by the Mass.gov announcement
Hikes are scheduled at 13 locations, including the scenic Middlesex Fells Reservation and Dunn State Park, with each trail offering different lengths and difficulty levels to accommodate varying abilities. Most locations will reward hikers with hot chocolate as a warm treat after their journey. DCR urges everyone to explore a local park if they can't join the planned events. Detailed information about hike specifics and advice on gear can be found on DCR's website.
