A Miami teen is facing hefty charges after allegedly turning a domestic dispute into a dangerous inferno. Dinio Ramos, 17, is accused of using a Molotov cocktail to set his twin brother's ex-girlfriend's car ablaze. Arrested on Thursday, Ramos is charged with arson, possession of a firebomb, and criminal mischief, according to NBC Miami.
"(Ramos) wanted them to break up, and he thought that by doing this, it would cause him to break up," Michael Vega of the Miami Police Department said. Ramos hoped to sever the relationship with a drastic act, and "eventually it did," as he stated in an interview obtained by NBC Miami. The ex-girlfriend, deeply affected by the incident, has since refused to go to school and is reticent to even leave her home. Her father, Juan Carlos Asencio, disclosed to NBC Miami that the trauma from the attack has left her panicked.
Video evidence shows Ramos meticulously dousing the car in liquid before setting it on fire—all the while recording the illicit act. Ramos's behavior escalated to the point where he was found possessing a backpack filled with items linked to the crime, including tape, nails, gloves, canned heat, a hand saw, and matches. The car was severely damaged, and investigators found homemade explosives at the scene.
Despite the young age, Ramos is to be tried as an adult and he has already made a court appearance. He acknowledged during the proceedings the potential for causing a house fire and "possibly killing several people," as per Newsbreak. Various incriminating items, including nails and latex gloves, were recovered by police in his house, linking him further to the arson. In court on Friday, he was granted house arrest, a degree of leniency in the face of his confessed offenses.
The fallout from Ramos's actions continues to ripple through his family and deeply affect the victim, providing a stark example of the echoes violence can softly but firmly imprint on a community. This case not only shone a light on the personal repercussions of such actions but also on the dangerousness of immature recklessness disguised as familial duty or misguided protection.
