Charges of domestic battery have led to the arrest of a Miramar police officer, according to reports from Hialeah authorities. Officer Orlando Marrero, 24, was taken into custody early Monday morning for allegedly strangling his girlfriend during a dispute at their Hialeah home, as per Local 10 News.
Employed with the Miramar Police Department since August 2022, Marrero's encounter with law enforcement took a decisive turn Sunday, just before 6 p.m., when he was arrested by the Hialeah Police. The conflict escalated after a computer mouse was thrown on the floor, prompting Marrero to allegedly grab the victim by the throat, according to the victim's account obtained by Local 10 News. He has been relieved of duty, as confirmed in a statement by Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss.
An off-duty Medley police sergeant happened to witness the altercation and intervened. Eventually, after the woman had freed herself and sought respite outside, her cries for help attracted the attention of the sergeant, who saw the two "wrestling" and proceeded to separate them before contacting the Hialeah police, as detailed by reports from Local 10 News. The victim reportedly bore bruising to her arms and scratches on her left shoulder blade, manifest vestiges of the encounter.
The Miramar Police Department has suspended Marrero, with an emphasis on the alleged victim's welfare. Standing over her, the Miramar police officer charged with domestic battery had his duties revoked as the matter continued to unwind, according to statements by police officials. Marrero, who remains innocent until proven guilty, was held at Miami-Dade County's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond for the felony charge, as reported by WSVN.
While Officer Marrero chose not to make any statement on the incident, the Miramar Police Department has addressed it with gravity.
