A tragic start to the week unfolded early Monday morning when a woman lost her life in a grim traffic collision in a Walmart parking lot, police say. According to an official statement from the City of Mountain View, dispatchers were alerted around 6 a.m. about a vehicle-pedestrian incident on the 500 block of Showers Drive.
The thick fog and darkness blanketing the lot may have played their part as a Walmart employee, arriving for work in the early hours, fatally struck the woman, believed to be in her 60s. Mountain View Police Department confirmed to the press that the victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was rushed to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly afterward.
Authorities have reported that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the accident. As initial investigations seem to indicate, the driver, whose cooperation with law enforcement following the dread event insinuates a collision devoid of intention or reckless abandon, has stayed at the scene and is aiding investigators in piecing together this lamentable puzzle.
Mountain View police personnel continued their meticulous examination of the collision site through the morning and have indicated that they expect to reopen the affected parking lot area imminently.
