Under the guidance of Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder and San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan, the task force has expanded its membership and crafted several objectives. "Reducing the threats and violence and, preventing potential crimes that put health care workers in danger is critical to making our health system the best that it can be."
The task force's blueprint for bolstering the medical community's safety includes establishing liaisons between hospitals and law enforcement, conducting tours for police at medical facilities, and enhancing training programs. They're also developing a new system to track incidents of violence against hospital employees. According to Van Gorder, the spectrum of abuse ranges from "demeaning comments, verbal abuse, and assaults" and the need for a communitywide effort to suppress these acts is critical.
Statistics from Scripps' five hospital campuses indicate a worrisome 31% spike in workplace violence during fiscal year 2023 compared to the previous year, with 484 incidents classified as assaults. This aligns with broader trends cited by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which states that health care employees are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than other workers. The task force hits home with the reality that physical safety needs to be ensured, and healthcare providers' emotional and psychological well-being should be prioritized to maintain patient care integrity. Scripps Health has also employed retired FBI cyber security expert Todd Walbridge, who now leads efforts to advance security and training within the organization.
