In San Diego County, a new initiative is targeting a growing trend among those struggling with housing affordability: a rising number of seniors facing the threat of homelessness. Officials note that 25% of the homeless population in the area is over the age of 55, and these numbers are on the uptick.
The Shallow Rental Subsidy Program, an 18-month pilot approved by the Board of Supervisors in the spring, has set out to assist low-income seniors by providing a monthly rental subsidy of $500 to select households. Despite the apparent need, as seen by the 2,000 applicants, the program's limited funding means only 220 will receive this assistance through a lottery system. Matthew Pallamary, a beneficiary of the program, said the financial aid helped him secure his own place after an unstable period of "couch surfing," according to County News Center.
While the initiative signals a step towards addressing the housing crisis among older adults in San Diego, the disparity between the demand for assistance and the program's capacity highlights the enormity of the issue at hand.
