San Diego's Miramar Reservoir is currently undergoing a transformation, as the city kicks off the installation of a new underwater pipeline, an endeavor part of the ambitious Pure Water Program. The project involves laying down a final, one-mile branched pipeline that will transport purified water from the North City Pure Water Facility to quench the city’s thirst.
After completing over 1,100 feet of tunneling earlier this year, workers have now begun the construction phase at the reservoir itself. This includes assembling the pipeline onshore before it's taken on barges for its final plunge underwater. “The subaqueous pipeline at Miramar Reservoir is a key construction project of the Pure Water Program to help provide for our future water needs,” Juan Guerreiro, Director of the City's Public Utilities Department, stated, as reported by InsideSD. The director also noted the progress, with the program recently reaching a 40% completion milestone for its Phase 1.
As the installation continues, shore areas remain open for enjoyment including picnics, barbecues, and fishing. However, for safety reasons, the reservoir has temporarily halted in-water recreational activities. Boats, canoes, kayaks, and float tubes must sit this dance out until the project reaches completion.
Pure Water San Diego represents a multi-year strategy to generate nearly half of the city’s water supply locally by the year 2035. This innovative program is tapping into advanced purification technologies to transform recycled water into a safe, sustainable, and high-quality drinking source. With 12 Pure Water projects currently under construction, Phase 1 of this program is expected to churn out an annual average of 30 million gallons of water per day. And there's more in the pipeline — Phase 2 is already in the planning stages, aiming to add another 53 million gallons per day to the city's supply chain.
