The vigilant eyes of the BART Police Department's officers led to the apprehension of a man carrying an illegal firearm and ammunition after he was observed dodging a fare gate at Civic Center Station. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Nathan Salinas from San Leandro, was detained by officers when he could not provide a satisfactory form of identification. A routine check escalated quickly when Salinas admitted to possessing a gun—a discovery that yielded a Glock 19 handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine, as detailed in an announcement by the BART Police Department.
As reported by the BART Police on their social media page, neither a concealed carry license nor gun registration was held by Salinas for the firearm in his possession. Subsequently, Salinas was booked at the San Francisco County Jail, with BART PD highlighting the removal of a dangerous weapon from the transit system as a result of their proactive enforcement strategy. This incident underscores a broader initiative by the BART PD to ensure commuter safety through an increased, visible safety presence on the BART system.
In their effort to bolster security for travelers, BART PD is also eagerly anticipating a significant safety upgrade. Announced as part of the same report, the department is initiating the installation of next-generation fare gate prototypes at West Oakland Station by the close of the month. These new fare gates are expected to be a cornerstone in the strategy to deter fare evasion—a catalyst for many of the safety issues faced by the transit system, including preventing individuals with illegal contraband from entering the BART network.
