Residents of San Marcos have a reason to celebrate as the city announced the official opening of the Via Vera Cruz bridge and Discovery Street, a significant upgrade to local infrastructure that's been years in the making. The city government heralded the event as a triumph for community connectivity and transportation, with Discovery Street's extension to Twin Oaks Valley Road anticipated to further improve the flow of travel.

Following a dedication ceremony held on December 15 for the former City Councilmember Pia Harris-Ebert, the newly named bridge now stands as a testament to her 24 years of dedicated service, which included a significant role in establishing the city's Redevelopment Agency. According to Hoodline, this agency was crucial in funding projects like the San Marcos Creek project, further cementing Harris-Ebert's legacy in the city.

The new bridge and roadway are replete with a list of enhancements aimed at combating seasonal flooding by elevating the roadway, expanding to four lanes for improved traffic flow, and adding new bike lanes and sidewalks for safer pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Isaac Etchamendy, City Engineer for the City of San Marcos, underscored the importance of these improvements, stating, “One of the main priorities of the Creek project was prioritizing residents’ ability to safely and efficiently travel throughout San Marcos." The city's dedication to this cause is reflected through the implementation of new infrastructure that not only improves travel but also brings community enhancement, said Etchamendy in a statement obtained by San Marcos' official website.

Not just a win for transportation, the project also includes upgrades that beautify and prepare the city for future growth. New utility lines have been placed underground, and construction of a new levee, reconfiguration of the Bent Avenue/Craven Intersection, and installation of a sound wall beside Lake View Mobile Estates are among the improvements the residents can look forward to. With the groundwork laid, attention now turns to the finishing touches including landscaping and the creation of Paseo del Arroyo Park, whose completion is slated for springtime, weather permitting.

While most of the heavy lifting is behind them, the construction crews will press on with final paving on Bent Avenue, which will entail a short closure in early January, as they work towards finalizing the park and other remaining aspects of the Creek project. Packs in traffic flaggers plan to keep disruption to a minimum, maintaining open roads even as the final striping takes place. The spirit of progress that has long invigorated this corner of San Marcos promises to carry on well into the new year.
