A 14-year-old boy and a 47-year-old woman were left fighting for their lives after a fire swept through their apartment building early Thursday in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood. Flames and smoke overwhelmed the two-story building at 1901 W. 47th St., with firefighters battling the blaze that started around 1:00 a.m. The critically injured victims were rushed to Stroger Hospital, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Enveloped in flames and visible danger, the building's windows and roof were broken through by the fire, as reported by the FOX 32 Chicago outlet. The Chicago Fire Department deployed multiple ground hoses and ladder trucks, dousing the stubborn fire for several hours, according to their reports.
The identities of the injured have not been released. The teen suffered burns to his arm, while the woman sustained more extensive injuries with burns throughout her body as firefighters fought to control the flames ravaging the building. No update on their condition has been provided since they were admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
As for the cause of the fire, which left an unspecified number of residents displaced, there is no word. The blaze added to the countless narratives of tragedies that unrelentingly strike at the heart of our communities with neither precedent nor prejudice. "Both were transported to Stroger Hospital. All companies are working," said Chicago Fire Media in a post, underscoring the immediate and coordinated response of emergency services to the crisis that unfolded within those flame-licked walls.
