UC San Diego Health has officially taken the wheel at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center, marking a significant step in the university’s health system expansion plans. The acquisition, sealed with a hefty $200 million, saw UCSD Health acquire the 302-bed facility from Prime Healthcare, per UC San Diego Health.

The move signals UCSD Health's commitment to expansion, aiming to create a robust network that stands out in health systems. Prioritizing equity, safety, and high-quality care, UCSD Health is not just making promises but is actively making strides toward East San Diego.

Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, highlighted the collaborative effort, stating, "Together, we start a new chapter to expand access to needed medical and surgical care in eastern San Diego.” The acquisition is part of a larger plan for UCSD Health's growth, addressing both short- and long-term public health needs in the community.

The rebranded UC San Diego Health East Campus Medical Center, located at 6655 Alvarado Road, signifies more than just a change in ownership. The facility has undergone a total overhaul, featuring new emergency facilities, a revamped ICU, and ambitious plans for enhanced behavioral health services. There are even discussions about a dedicated patient care tower in collaboration with the County of San Diego in the future.

At the forefront of patient care, Kenneth D. McFarland, chief executive of East Campus Medical Center, is enthusiastic about teaming up with UCSD Health to continue their half-century of service. Their focus on mental health includes centralizing and improving psychiatric services. Dr. Jeff Daskalakis, a leading physician, emphasized the importance of a centralized behavioral health model, integrating inpatient and outpatient services under one roof.

UCSD Health doesn't plan to slow down. Upcoming projects include a medical campus renovation at Hillcrest, a new outpatient surgical center slated for 2025, and the prospect of a new modern hospital. Additionally, new clinics are sprouting up across the region, demonstrating UCSD Health's commitment to continuous improvement and expansion.
