A high-speed police chase through the streets of Miami came to a dramatic end as a stolen cargo van was stopped in its tracks by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper's precision interception technique. The chase, which spiraled across Interstate 95, concluded with the suspect's arrest on charges including aggravated battery and grand theft of a vehicle.
According to a report by Local 10 News, the wild pursuit began Monday afternoon in Miami-Dade County when the suspect, identified as Jose Carlos Blanquicett, stole a Ford cargo van. Blanquicett reportedly commandeered the vehicle at North Miami Toyota's parts department, wearing nothing but his underwear. He then led authorities on a frenzied chase, first spotted at Northeast 15th Avenue and 171st Street, and then tearing down southbound I-95.
In their attempt to apprehend Blanquicett, troopers executed several P.I.T. maneuvers—a tactic where a police vehicle nudges the fleeing car to make it spin and come to a stop. The chase reached its conclusion on the onramp to the Airport Expressway from I-95's Express lanes, where Blanquicett's attempt to escape the law finally ground to a halt, as revealed by NBC Miami.
After the van was immobilized, Blanquicett reportedly tried to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. A witness, preferring to stay anonymous, recounted to Local 10 News the bizarre sight of the suspect in his scant attire when he made the initial theft. The aftermath of the pursuit saw an FHP cruiser damaged; its front was ripped off during the engagement. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported.
Blanquicett is now facing a roster of serious charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding police after a crash, grand theft of a vehicle, and reckless driving.
