A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle in a late-night hit-and-run in Garfield Park, Chicago. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. early Saturday when the victim was hit by a red SUV on the 4200 block of West Congress Parkway.
Following the collision, the driver of the SUV reportedly fled the scene, heading north on Kildare Ave. The woman, whose identity remains unknown, was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. According to city data cited by the Tribune, more than half of the pedestrians killed in auto accidents in Chicago are victims of SUVs or other large vehicles.
Further details provided by FOX 32 Chicago reveal that the victim did not appear to be using a crosswalk at the time she was struck. The area was swarmed by responding officers around 9:35 p.m. Friday to the traffic crash scene.
