Chaos erupted on New Year's Day as flames engulfed an apartment complex along Joseph E. Boone Boulevard in northwest Atlanta, leaving sixteen people without a home and prompting a robust arson investigation. Just before the 5 p.m., Atlanta Fire Rescue dispatched crews to a report of an apartment fire with a person trapped inside near Dixie Hills Circle, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found, that the fire had rapidly climbed from the lower apartment to one above, threatening to consume neighboring units. Their quick intervention ensured the blaze was suppressed before more units were consumed. Meanwhile, Atlanta police officers were on the ground, assisting residents to evacuate the complex, according to Atlanta News First.
Luckily, there were no reported injuries, and no harrowing rescues were required. While two apartments bore the brunt of fire's wrath, another six suffered collateral damage in the form of smoke and water, a testament to the fierceness and spread of the fire.
Captain Scott Powell, with Atlanta Fire and Rescue, shared with reporters, "Witnesses on the scene reported somebody started the fire in the apartment." He recounted how the suspected arsonist was "seen fanning the fire by other residents of the apartment through his open door", indicating a chilling disregard for the safety and lives of neighbors. The individual associated with this act of arson was taken into custody by Atlanta police, as they attempted to flee the scene.
The Red Cross stepped up in the aftermath to assist those left homeless, providing essential support and resources to the displaced residents. As for the suspect, their name has yet to be released pending further investigation.
