A tragic turn of events unfolded late on Thursday in Chandler, as two victims lost their lives in a head-on collision that may have been provoked by a sudden medical emergency, authorities say. As reported by azfamily.com, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has identified 33-year-old Taylor Stithem and 36-year-old Sara Papila as the fatalities in the crash that occurred near Hunt Highway and McQueen Road. Despite initial uncertainties, speed and alcohol have now been ruled out as contributing factors.
The accident happened around 10:15 p.m. when Raymond Sampaga, 47, veered to dramatically cross the center line and collided with the SUV that Stithem was driving and in which Papila was a passenger. The aftermath was immediate and fatal for Stithem and Papila, while Sampaga was taken urgently to hospital with serious injuries. According to details obtained by azfamily.com, MCSO suspects that Sampaga may have suffered a medical event preceding the crash.
Before the identification of the victims, uncertainty clouded the circumstances around the collision. An earlier azfamily.com report covered the basic facts of the head-on crash, noting the time just after 10 p.m., the location, and the initial absence of information regarding the involvement of speed or impairment.
The incident caused the closure of the intersection, disrupting the flow of the night-time traffic until it eventually reopened at around 7 a.m. the following morning. As investigations continue to confirm a full understanding of the cause of the collision, the community mourns the sudden loss of life and hopes for the recovery of the injured driver.
