Drivers on a Yavapai County highway got a real-life samurai scare on the Friday before last when a convicted felon was seen swinging a full-sized sword near passing traffic. Arizona troopers arrived, took the blade away and made an arrest without anyone being hurt. The strange roadside episode only came to light days later, after authorities released more details.
According to Fox 10 Phoenix, startled motorists called 911 about the man along State Route 69 in Mayer. Troopers found the sword and a large sheath, then disarmed the suspect and booked him for disorderly conduct involving weapons, along with an active outstanding warrant. The Arizona Department of Public Safety did not release his name.
Arizona Law Treats Weapon Displays As A Felony
Arizona law classifies disorderly conduct involving the reckless handling, display or discharge of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument as a class 6 felony, according to the Arizona Revised Statutes. State law also separately addresses possession of a deadly or prohibited weapon by a prohibited possessor. The public information available so far does not establish whether prosecutors will file additional charges in this case.
Fox 10 Phoenix reported that authorities have not said what charges are connected to the outstanding warrant. Troopers' warning after the arrest was blunt: "Safety isn't a movie stunt," they said, urging people who see dangerous conduct to call 911 rather than intervene.
