Gun-toting robbers met their match in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, when a concealed carry license holder exchanged gunfire with one of his would-be muggers early Tuesday morning. According to ABC7 Chicago, the shootout occurred after the 23-year-old victim, armed with a legally registered firearm, was confronted by a suspect who emerged from a vehicle and demanded his belongings.

The incident, which unfolded around 4:20 a.m. on the 5400-block of North Winthrop Avenue, ended with the assailant retreating empty-handed to a waiting SUV — his efforts thwarted by the victim's armed response. The Chicago Police Department reported the victim was unharmed, although it remains unclear if the suspect sustained any injuries in the exchange. Following the altercation, the white sedan, and dark-colored SUV fled the scene, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

This violent standoff was one of three possibly related robberies that occurred in Edgewater and nearby West Ridge. The crime spree began when two armed men robbed a 45-year-old in his vehicle on the 2100 block of West Lunt Avenue at 3:40 a.m., with the culprits fleeing in a silver SUV. Approximately thirty minutes later, another individual, aged 29, was robbed at gunpoint while sitting in his vehicle in the 6100 block of North Wolcott Avenue.

Police are investigating the possibility that these three attacks are connected, with Area Three detectives on the case. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation continues. Residents, now accustomed to such scenes, await answers with a mix of weary resignation and concern for their once-peaceful streets now echoing with gunfire and fear.
