A man was left in critical condition after someone opened fire from a dark-colored SUV on a West Town street, striking him twice in the chest. Chicago police officers responded to the 1500 block of West Augusta Boulevard at 8:33 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call about a person shot, and the victim was rushed to a nearby Level 1 trauma center to fight for his life.
According to police, a dark-colored SUV drove by the victim's location before an unknown person opened fire from inside the vehicle, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago Fire Department personnel treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Police described the victim only as a male of undisclosed age, and no further details about his identity have been released.
The shooting falls within the boundaries of the Chicago Police Department's 12th (Near West) District, which covers West Town, Humboldt Park, East Village, and the Near West Side. Area 4 detectives are now investigating, the same division that handles nonfatal and fatal shooting cases across the West Side and relies on community tips submitted through CPDtip.com to identify suspects. A Block With a Violent History
This is not the first time the 1500 block of West Augusta Boulevard has drawn police attention. In April 2019, two men were arrested after carjacking a 25-year-old woman on the same block as she loaded items into her vehicle, a chase that ended in a crash on the South Side, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The block was also the site of an armed robbery in December 2022, during a six-day span in which Chicago police recorded more than 50 armed holdups committed by roving crews across the city, per CBS News.
The severity of Saturday's shooting carries significant legal weight if a suspect is eventually identified. Discharging a firearm and injuring another person in Illinois is prosecuted as aggravated battery with a firearm under 720 ILCS 5/12-3.05(e), a Class X felony, according to Combs Waterkotte. Class X felonies carry a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years, with no eligibility for probation.
Trauma Response at Stroger Hospital
The victim was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, which operates the busiest Level 1 Adult Trauma Center in Illinois, treating roughly 120,000 emergency and trauma patients annually, per Cook County Health. Stroger serves as the primary public safety-net trauma provider for gunshot victims across Chicago's West Side, a role it has repeatedly played in nearby shootings.
The hospital treated a 34-year-old man shot multiple times in an alley in the 1600 block of West Ohio Street this past March, just blocks from Augusta Boulevard, though he was pronounced dead there, Hoodline previously reported on a fatal alley shooting. In February, a 32-year-old driver shot in the chest in the 700 block of North Wolcott Avenue also died at Stroger, prompting community leaders and business owners to demand greater police visibility in West Town.
A Neighborhood on Edge Despite Falling Crime Numbers
Saturday's shooting comes even as Chicago's overall violence numbers have improved. The city recorded a 29% drop in homicides in 2025, reaching its lowest annual total since 1965, while reported violent crime fell 15% citywide in August 2026 compared to prior years, according to Chicago Police Department data. Yet isolated drive-by attacks involving unidentified vehicles, like the dark SUV described in Saturday's shooting, continue to disrupt a sense of safety in gentrifying pockets of West Town.
Gun violence has struck the immediate area before with fatal consequences.
