A former U.S. Army officer linked to the recent Texas shooting spree that left six dead was previously investigated for domestic violence, details have emerged. Shane James Jr. faced military scrutiny for an altercation with his then-wife back in 2014. The outcome of said investigation remains hazy, as he was never formally charged, enabling him to later bypass a federal background check in the acquisition of the .45 caliber handgun utilized in last month's violence, according to American-Statesman

James' history with law enforcement also included a standoff with Bexar County deputies during a mental health crisis months before the shootings, and a misdemeanor family violence arrest in 2022 after which he refused court-ordered rehab and removed his GPS monitor, sparking a warrant that went unenforced for over a year. Despite this, when deputies encountered James three months prior to the rampage, no arrest was made, reported by American-Statesman.

In the wake of the shootings, James, now facing capital murder charges, reportedly attempted an escape from Travis County Jail by breaking free from a corrections officer, as per Kristen Dark, a Travis County sheriff's spokesperson. "The suspect resisted when corrections officers detained him," Dark stated to CBS News.

Authorities believe the spree began with the deaths of Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56, thought to be the suspect's parents, in San Antonio, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar relayed. Four more lives were claimed in Austin, with Emmanuel Pop Ba, 32, and Sabrina Rahman, 24, becoming victims in broad daylight. Catherine Short, 56, and Lauren Short, 30, were later discovered slain in a separate Austin residence, casualties of a burgled domicile turned tragic, as per CBS News.
