Brace yourselves, Atlanta, Mother Nature's gearing up to wallop the region with severe storms on Friday, complete with a chaser of an arctic blast to snap us all to attention as we shuffle into next week. According to FOX5 Atlanta.
Before we get a faceful of Arctic chill, we're in for a brief respite. "Warmer weather moves in Thursday ahead of this next weathermaker," reports NBC 15. Highs on Thursday are creeping into the mid 60s, but don’t let that fool you – the mercury will take a nosedive from Monday into Tuesday, courtesy of a one-two punch of icy air hot on the heels of Friday's storm.
And while Friday morning might kick off in the relatively cozy mid-50s, with highs scraping the lower 70s, folks should expect an abrupt switcheroo when rain and thunderstorms gatecrash the party during the morning hours. This isn't just a drizzle and a breeze – NBC 15 warns of "damaging wind gusts (70+mph), quarter-size hail, and a tornado can't be ruled out." Sure, it might be a swift sweep across the city, but it's one with a stinger.
Come the weekend, the tempest takes a breather, and Atlanta can bask in a healthy dose of Vitamin D with "a ton of sun from start to finish," predicts FOX5 Atlanta. But enjoy that sunshine while it lasts. For Dr. Martin Luther King Day on Monday, we might see a sprinkle or two with highs cuddling up in the mid 50s. Then, as if on cue, that arctic blast will swoop in on Tuesday morning, dragging temps down to the downright frigid mid 20s to start, with highs struggling to the lower 40s. By the heart of the afternoon, we're talking upper 40s if we're lucky.
Gearing up for the chilly times ahead, it's imperative to have your winter wardrobe at the ready, and maybe rethink that beach trip – the Gulf of Mexico is tossing and turning with a high risk of rip currents still in play. And remember, stay warm, but keep it safe – check that your heating methods are up to snuff to fend off the impending frost without any mishaps.
