A tragic end came to a weeks-long struggle for survival after a 14-year-old girl succumbed to injuries from a hit-and-run in northeast Austin last month. Treyshur Carter, who was critically injured on Dec. 30, battled for her life in the hospital before dying on Jan. 5, police confirmed.
Responding to the scene of the crash on Farmhaven Road, police discovered the teen with severe injuries. As noted by KXAN, Austin-Travis County EMS provided immediate treatment before transferring Carter to Dell Seton Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition until her death. The Austin Police Department has stated that intensive investigative efforts are underway, involving multiple units, to piece together the circumstances of the incident.
The severity of Carter's injuries was grievous, with her family disclosing to FOX 7 Austin that she suffered a broken femur, fractured neck, and had an emergency splenectomy. Heartbreakingly, her family has expressed frustrations over the progress of the investigation. "We've basically just had to do a lot of the work ourselves, you know, go out there, pick up cans, any debris, any trail left behind that could possibly lead to who did this to her," Emani Carter, Treyshur's sister, said.
As this family grieves, the Austin Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward. Details that may currently seem inconsequential could prove crucial in the ongoing investigation spearheaded by the APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit.
