Austin, a city navigating the pains of growth and traffic nightmares, is putting rubber to the road and spades to the soil in 2024. Transformative upgrades to the transportation network aim not only to improve commutes but to enhance quality of life. Work on the I-35 Capital Express Central project is set to begin, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is revving up a baggage system overhaul as part of a broader expansion plan.

Kicking off this year's slate of roadworks is the construction of the I-35 Capital Express Central project, focusing on the stretch between Holly Street and State Hwy. 71 and Ben White Boulevard, KXAN reports. This ambitious effort includes the construction along the east side pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake and the intersection at Riverside Drive.

Moving skyward, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) will finalize Phase 1 of its new baggage handling system, set to start screening bags in 2024. The airport is also gearing up for several other developments in its "Journey With AUS" program which, as KXAN notes, include the midfield concourse, tunnel, and new terminal curbside roadway among others, all slotted to secure procurements throughout 2024.

Meanwhile, the Project Connect light rail program marches on, with a hefty to-do list for the incoming year, focusing on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process crucial for utilizing federal funds. The Austin Transit Partnership will invite public input early this year to refine the draft Environmental Impact Statement slated for release in Fall 2024, according to KXAN.

With an eye to the future, Austin's city leaders envision a decade where public transit and affordable housing meld. Some, including residents like Lulee Guerrero, have already reaped the benefits of living near transit hubs. Guerrero, a surgical technologist, told the Austin American-Statesman about her personal journey from hardship to a career in the medical field, facilitated by her proximity to public transit. Austin's planned improvements, such as the construction of new light rail lines and affordable housing projects, aim to provide a similar uplift to more citizens in the coming years.

City officials are pushing for "equitable transit-oriented development" that will lay the groundwork for these amenities and more. The Austin American-Statesman reports that, with such development, Austin aims to become more walkable with dense, community-focused projects that could help drive down the cost of living in the city as it continues to expand.
