Chaos ensued in Central East Austin this morning, as residents and commuters faced the surprise disruption of a major water main break. According to a KVUE report, the incident occurred on the 4400 block of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, close to Springdale Road. The Austin Fire Department was quick on the scene, handling the crisis that unfolded shortly before the bustle of the morning commute.
Initially, there was no clear estimate on when the situation would be resolved, with the roadway shut in both directions forcing drivers to seek out detours. The blockage caused a significant hiccup in traffic flow in the area, as crews from the Austin Transportation and Public Works department swarmed to manage the emergency. A snapshot of the chaos was captured and shared by KVUE's Tyler Feldman during his morning commute, underscoring the intensity of the break.
Providing some relief to the area residents, and commuters, a CBS Austin update confirmed that the situation was brought under control by 10 a.m. The Austin Transportation and Public Works department had managed to resolve the utility break, albeit after bringing the busy area to a standstill for a few hours.
