San Francisco's storied sandwich scene is losing a gem—Delirama, a Bay Area pastrami hotspot, is shutting its doors this weekend with final service slated for January 28 at 3 p.m., or until their storied meats and breads run out, as reported by sf.eater.com. Cash Caris and Anahita Cann, the duo behind Delirama, faced a tough decision, citing insurmountable challenges in maintaining their passion-driven business; Caris emphasized in a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle that despite the love for the craft, sustainability required a shift towards proper business methodologies from the backend first.
The owners encountered costly misfortunes in their journey, including a devastating walk-in shutdown, which threw back an estimated $100,000—a combined loss from spoiled goods and necessary repairs. Despite the efforts, including crowdfunding and high-interest loans from POS systems company Toast, sustaining operations was untenable, according to Anahita Cann's candid admission to the San Francisco Chronicle. The current Delirama space at 1746 Solano Avenue won't stay idle for long, Caris plans to usher in a new business venture, though the concept remains a work in progress, and while the Delirama name is set to retire, Caris and Cann will keep the legacy alive through their original venture, Pyro’s Pastrami, continuing to sell the beloved smoked meat by the pound along with rye bread.
Delirama commenced its journey in Berkeley's Solano Avenue in August 2022 and quickly set itself apart by featuring pastrami in nearly all its offerings as "pastrami on everything," KQED noted; it all began as a pop-up in Jack London Square during the early pandemic days through Pyro's Pastrami which was founded by Caris and Cann. A heartfelt Instagram post by Delirama reflected on the dedication required to run a business that eclipses mere profit, highlighting Caris's love for the craft as the driving force behind their menu offerings.
In an emotional goodbye on Instagram, Caris paid homage to Cann's vital contribution to both Pyro's and Delirama—acknowledging that without her, the pop-up would not have reached its zenith and describing her as the equilibrium the brand desperately needed, her authenticity, dedication, and her exceptional way of making customers feel like kin were truly irreplaceable; Canis reinforced his commitment to support Cann as she seeks her path, mirroring the unwavering support she provided as documented in Delirama's official Instagram post.
Patrons still have a final chance to savor Delirama’s crafted sandwiches, as the establishment remains open with a limited menu until the designated closing time, additionally, Delirama's website thanked customers for their patronage and teased the arrival of a fresh concept on the horizon—no farewells, just a brief pause until the new venture is unveiled, the note can be read in full at delirama.com.
